Place data in the app — a derivative database under ODbL 1.0
The Nautly app contains a file with 302336 named places (lighthouses, harbours, marinas, capes, islands and settlements). It powers the place description in the logbook, for example “3.4 nm S of Pomorac Lighthouse”. The data comes from OpenStreetMap and was filtered, cleaned up in the names, de-duplicated and converted into a custom binary format for this purpose. The file is therefore a derivative database under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0 and is licensed under the same terms.
Offer under ODbL 1.0, Section 4.6
We offer every person who receives the app, or a work produced with it, the following files free of charge, without registration and in machine-readable form. They contain the complete method by which the place file is produced from OpenStreetMap (ODbL 1.0, Section 4.6 b):
- bauen.py — generator: class selection, naming rules including every word list used, de-duplication, filters
- nob1.py — writer for the NOB1 file format
- befehle.txt — the osmium commands used, in the order of the run, with the versions of the tools used
- HERKUNFT.json — OSM snapshot, point counts per class, SHA-256 of the generated file, commit of the recipe
The source material is the full OpenStreetMap planet of 5 October 2026, file planet-261005.osm.pbf, 95244184503 bytes, MD5 d3b708ffc28873cf24a053e092dfd731. It is published by the OpenStreetMap Foundation at planet.openstreetmap.org and is likewise licensed under ODbL 1.0. From that file and the files above, the place file is reproduced in full; the cross-check is its SHA-256 68e468545c3f09814a5408d527b26de2dcc0205ada9af905858863da95aab848, which also appears in HERKUNFT.json.
If you would rather have the finished file: send a message to support@nautly.ch with the keyword “place data”. We will send you ortsbeschrieb.bin (5606003 bytes, about 5.6 MB) free of charge, for any released version of the app, including older ones.
